The Grand Theatre of Bordeaux

The stairs at the Grand Theatre are a good meeting point

The Grand Theatre de Bordeaux, is a Theatre in Bordeaux, France. When I visited, it seemed like the stairs were full of people waiting to meet their friends or dates. In addition to ballet and opera performances, the Theatre has a great cafe and restaurant. The entrance gallery looks similar to the galleries surrounding the gardens of the Palais Royal in Paris since they were designed by the same architect. The facade consists of a portico of 12 colossal columns which support a deck on which 12 statues stand.

Walking through the vineyards in Saint Emilion

A UNESCO World Heritage Site

The friendly lady at the Bordeaux Tourism Office must have seen my hesitation when she informed me of the price for a winery tour of Saint Emilion. I thought it was a lot of money and I thought that I could do it on my own. When I was ready to walk away, she provided me with a map of Saint Emilion. Since I don’t speak French, she suggested I call the wineries directly once I arrived in town and ask if they were offering guided visits in English. I was glad I did my homework before. I had checked the fare for the short train ride from Bourdeaux. The quick trip to Saint Emilion was priced very reasonably and the returning trains run frequently so you can return at any time. So the next day we headed out for a visit to the countryside.
Upon arriving, there were no taxis or buses into town so we had to walk a bit. Light rain was starting so I called the closest winery in the map. A tour in English was about to start in a few minutes. After the visit, hunger was setting in but the center of town was still a few hills away. After lunch and wandering thru the wine stores, we walked back to the train station. It was a good experience and a great walk in beautiful wine country.
